There goes the game. I don’t really think it’s anybody else. You get a hit there, even drive in one run (by hitting) a ground ball, double play. Should have done that in the first inning. The game changes a little bit there.”

Things have gotten bad enough, evidently, that Machado was wishing his fruitless at-bats had come in a different order, so he could have done something productive in yesterday’s 3-0 loss to the Phillies.

As it went, he struck out with the bases loaded and none out in the first inning when a double-play grounder would have driven in a run, and he hit into an inning-ending double play in the third inning when a strikeout would have at least allowed another batter to come to the plate.

Now, that next batter was Jackson Merrill, who went 0-for-4 to drop his batting average to .198. And virtually no one except Miguel Andujar, Ty France and Fernando Tatis Jr. did anything on offense yesterday.

But Machado, who also struck out with a runner on third base yesterday, knows he is the straw that stirs the stink right now.

That is the burden of a guy whose contract pays him an average of more than $31.8 million a year.

Machado is batting .170/.265/.330, all the worst numbers he has ever had 51 games into any of his 15 seasons.

His batting average ranks 166th out of 170 qualifying MLB hitters. His on-base percentage is 163rd. His slugging percentage is 145th.

There are many ways to build a winning record.

Consider the Padres’ playoff seasons with Machado.

The Padres began the 2022 season 32-21, and to that point Machado had a .983 OPS in the 51 games he had played. The rest of the Padres were hitting .220/.299/.321 (.620 OPS) in that span.

In 2026, the rest of the Padres are hitting .225/.297/.367 (.664 OPS).

The difference is Machado.

That doesn’t have to be the case. In 2020, Machado was one of three players with an OPS above .900 to this point. In 2025, he was one of four with an OPS of .800 or greater.

He was struggling in 2024 – with an OPS of .653 through his first 51 games – but the Padres were being carried by Jurickson Profar (.942), Kyle Higashioka (.824), Jake Cronenworth (.791) and four other players with an OPS of at least .700.

This year, Gavin Sheets (.838) and Miguel Andujar (.792) are the only Padres players with at least 100 plate appearances that have an OPS above .689. (The Padres are one of two teams with fewer than three players with an OPS of .700 or better, and they are one of four teams with fewer than four such players.)

But Machado is the one batting third or fourth every game and the one they are paying to be considerably better than these numbers:

There is a metric called RE24 (Run Expectancy 24) that purports to measure the number of runs a player adds compared to an average player based on his results and the situations in which those results come. Machado’s RE24 this season is minus-5.53, according to Baseball-Reference.

He has been worse before. According to Baseball-Reference, his RE24 after 51 games in 2024 was minus-6.51. He finished that season with an RE24 of 13.80.

Machado has since joining the Padres generally finished seasons better than he started, partly because he usually goes on at least one monthlong tear at some point in late summer, though that did not happen last season.

His history is not all that says he still merits the benefit of the doubt.

It could be considered surprising that yesterday was as bad as it was, despite what his season numbers have been and as poorly as he has performed in the clutch this season.

He really has seemed for about a week to be on the verge of one of his epic runs. He is walking more, letting pitches go that aren’t suited for damage, just missing on some swings. That is generally a sign.

“It’s coming,” he said last night. “I’m a click away. Just need one to fall. They’ll start coming.”

Exceeding expectations

Historically, teams score at least two runs about half the time and at least one run about 80% of the time after loading the bases with no outs.

That is why Phillies pitching coach Caleb Cotham told pitcher Jesus Luzardo during a mound visit before Machado’s at-bat to not worry about a run scoring.

“It was a great visit at the time,” Luzardo told reporters in the Phillies clubhouse. “He came out and was like, ‘Just limit the damage. Don’t try to put up a zero,’ which ended up happening.”

Stuff keeps coming

My game story from yesterday (here) focused on the Padres allowing Luzardo off the hook early and often and how they enter today’s game having gone hitless in their past 25 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Read more California evacuation area reduced as danger of explosion ends

Luzardo might not have had his best stuff working yesterday, but he was still effective in large part because he has some of the best stuff in the major leagues.

It does not get any easier for the Padres the next two days.

They face Aaron Nola tonight and Cristopher Sanchez tomorrow afternoon.

Nola, like Luzardo, has an inflated ERA this season but a FIP and xERA that suggest he has been a little unlucky. And he has a 2.73 ERA in his past four starts against the Padres.

Also, Nola’s “stuff” rates among the best in the major leagues.

Luzardo (110) was the ninth starting pitcher the Padres have faced this season with a Stuff+ rating of 105 or higher. Nola (105) will be the 10th. Sanchez (118) will be the 11th. There are just 26 starting pitchers who have thrown at least 40 innings and are rated that high.

(Stuff+ is a metric that rates the “nastiness” of a pitcher’s arsenal based on velocity, movement, spin, release point and other factors. A score of 110 means a pitcher’s “stuff” is considered 10% better than average.)

No other team has faced that many starting pitchers with that kind of stuff.

Canning shines with Durán

The obvious positive takeaway from yesterday’s game was that Griffin Canning allowed three runs on three hits over 6⅔ innings.

It was by far the best of his five starts.

The three hits: Kyle Schwarber’s solo homer in the first inning and his single that preceded Brandon Marsh’s two-run homer in the seventh inning.

“There’s a lot of positives to take, for sure,” Canning said. “Obviously ended on a little bit of a sour note, but I feel like I’m usually trying to look at the positives and how I can build on those. I had a lot of quick outs, just kind of using all my pitches. (Rodolfo) Durán was on the same page with me. We called a great game. We’re communicating well in between innings.”

That Canning was locating his pitches far more consistently than in any of his previous starts had much more to do with his success than who was catching him. But it shouldn’t be entirely discounted that yesterday was the first time Durán was behind the plate for one of Canning’s Padres starts.

He did catch three of Canning’s five rehab outings with Triple-A El Paso.

“I think he knows my stuff,” Canning said. “He has actually been catching a lot of my bullpens during the week, so I think he just has kind of learned to know what I like to do, how my pitches move, and stuff like that.”

There was also the matter of Freddy Fermin having taken a substantial number of foul balls off various parts of his body, including at least eight that have rattled his facemask.

“Just wanted to mix it up for Griff … and then give Freddy just a little bit of a breather,” Padres manager Craig Stammen said. “He’s been getting hit in the head quite a bit, and a lot of dings on his feet and his legs. So a couple days off for him just to recoup and get back at it.”

And there is the fact Fermin is batting .146 and is hitless in his past 15 at-bats. Durán, who caught the past two games, was 0-for-2 and was hit by a pitch yesterday.

Yuki doing it

Yuki Matsui threw two scoreless innings at the end of yesterday’s game.

Now the pitcher the Padres pretty much reluctantly put back on their roster earlier this month has worked 12 scoreless innings over his six appearances this season.

The command and movement on his fastball is much improved, which helps his splitter be more effective.

The biggest mechanical change by Matsui has had to do with his being more forceful on his landing, where he was often slipping in previous seasons, and in the fact he has done away with the pause in his delivery.

“I feel I’m able to transfer the energy into the ball more efficiently this year,” he said.

He has worked a minimum of four outs in his appearances this season, something the Padres asked him to start doing while he was on his rehab assignment following an adductor strain in spring training.

“He has had a phenomenal season,” Stammen said. “He put in a lot of work this offseason, trained the entire off season, had a tough spring training, got hurt right away, and had a couple injuries. And then he went down and went to work. Went to El Paso. We kept him down there for basically as long as we could, and he didn’t say ‘boo.’ He came up and we prepared him to be able to pitch more than one inning. … And he has come up, and he’s been really big for us saving the bullpen.”

Matsui, who brought a 3.86 ERA into 2026, has a clause in his contract that says he cannot be optioned to the minor leagues. That is essentially the only reason he was activated on May 6.

He acknowledged yesterday that he came in knowing he needed to be better this season, the third on his five-year, $28 million deal.

“I know that they’re not going to be able to wait for so many years,” he said.

Matsui has not entered a game this season when the Padres trailed by fewer than three runs. The only time he pitched with a lead was when they were up 7-0 against the Mariners on May 17.

“Right now, I’m taking on obviously a non-leverage multi-inning spot,” Matsui said through interpreter Ike Ogata. “But continuing to do well for what I’m giving, then hopefully I will move up and pitch in more important, more leverage situations.”

Schwarber Park

Schwarber hits home runs everywhere. He leads the National League with 21 homers this season, led the league with 56 last season and has hit more homers (208) than all but Aaron Judge (227) since 2022.

But his 11 home runs at Petco Park in just 93 at-bats (including postseason) are notable.

Among players with at least 40 at-bats at the ballpark, Schwarber’s average of one homer every 8.45 at-bats is second among active players behind Giancarlo Stanton’s rate of one every 7.15 at-bats (13 in 93).

Tom Krasovic wrote a column (here) on Schwarber having no trouble hitting homers at the ballpark where a lot of people have trouble hitting homers.

Read more BMW Drops Hot X5 Lease Deals for the Month of May

Tidbits

Tatis reached base all four times he went to the plate yesterday, hitting two singles and walking twice.
