It\u2019s beautiful. It\u2019s unreal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Soldano, who\u2019s co-listing the property with his father Dan Soldano, said the combination of architecture, acreage and long\u2011term stewardship sets Hyholme apart.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople that come here and see the pictures \u2014 I\u2019ve heard people say it looks like Disneyland, or it\u2019s a museum, but there\u2019s nothing like this in Loomis,\u201d he said. \u201cYou see Victorians in Sacramento, but you don\u2019t get a Victorian house with three acres with the koi ponds, the pools, the tennis court. It\u2019s nothing like you see in Loomis. It\u2019s completely different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>During a recent broker tour, Soldano said one visitor\u2019s reaction stood out.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe loves Victorians,\u201d he said. \u201cShe started crying while she was in here. There\u2019s so much \u2014 you can tell there\u2019s so much that has gone on in this house, and the love that\u2019s poured in this house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Recalling Tuscany<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Longtime Pendleton Hyholme owner Dan Haley added his own comparison of the view:<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look out the back side of the house, that\u2019s what Italy looks like. Every time I go out there I immediately remember Tuscany.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The large home \u2014 6,000 square feet with seven bedrooms and five bathrooms \u2014 flows easily from room to room, and up and down three levels. With the historic estate on the market for the first time in 50 years, potential buyers get an opportunity to live in an authentic Victorian mansion that lives comfortably in the modern world.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s what you call a combination of luxury and character,\u201d Haley said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The estate\u2019s architecture and roots are notably distinguishable from the town\u2019s newly built Mediterranean mansions. Loomis lies along Interstate 80 in the Sierra Nevada foothills, 25 miles northeast of Sacramento.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>For nearly 50 years, the home has been in the hands of Haley, a former CPA and lifelong tennis player, and his late wife, Glenna, who bought the property in 1976 and spent decades restoring it.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really bought it cheap in today\u2019s dollars,\u201d Haley said, \u201cbut it was 15 years of (grueling) labor and fortunes to restore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The historic estate is a rare survivor from Loomis\u2019 early ties to fruit orchards and packing after first being settled by gold miners. In the 1860s, the Central Pacific Railroad laid tracks, which allowed for crops to be transported to market.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The home\u2019s first owner, pioneer William Courtland Pendleton, was an Englishman of modest means until he inherited a substantial fortune in the late 1800s and built Hyholme on the Loomis ridgetop. During the 1960s, the Victorian stood vacant for six months and was heavily damaged by vandals.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Falling for faded Victorian<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>When Dan and Glenna first encountered Hyholme, they weren\u2019t looking for another project. They were already restoring a bungalow in Folsom when an old aerial photo changed everything.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis lady \u2026 had an aerial photograph of this house on her wall, because she had sold it,\u201d Haley recalled. \u201cMy wife fell in love with the picture \u2026 for weeks she talked about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Eventually, he gave in.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a moment of weakness, I said, \u2018Okay, let\u2019s do it.\u2019 I drove up here &#8230; Back then it was just a dirt driveway, and I looked up at the house, and then I fell in love with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The romance came with plenty of reality. The home had been through foreclosure and hard use, and parts of it had been stripped.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day we closed was October 31, Halloween night,\u201d Haley said. \u201cI came up here Halloween night and slept in a sleeping bag by myself with a cat running down the piano keys,\u201d Haley said. \u201cThe house had literally been ripped off. It was a total redo. The great thing about the house is it had great bones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Much of that ornate exterior has been painstakingly rebuilt.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust the sheer enormity of the things we\u2019ve done \u2014 you see the railings out here and the top rails and those bottom rails all around the porch,\u201d Haley said. \u201cWe originally ordered \u2026 like 1,500 spindles, those turnings. We had to take those top railings out of the old holes and make new holes and put the spindles in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Even the rough-shawn, interlocking siding bears his handiwork.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee that siding there? That\u2019s shiplap siding \u2026 but it doesn\u2019t come with that groove on it,\u201d he says. \u201cI actually sat out here with a little table and routed every one of those grooves \u2026 because that was what was on the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Inside, the home balances historic detail with modern livability. The main floor includes a stately foyer, grand living room and a spacious formal dining room illuminated by two chandeliers, ideal for holidays and large gatherings. A richly appointed library\/office with built\u2011ins and a billiard room with pocket doors echo the Victorian era\u2019s love of formal entertaining.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<h2>Dramatic staircase<\/h2>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>The dramatic main staircase, rebuilt by a specialty millwork shop, became a project of its own.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had them mill all of these pieces, and they are like the originals, but they\u2019re bigger,\u201d Haley said. \u201cIt\u2019s just how it used to look. It took the guys six weeks to put that stairwell in, trying to figure out the gooseneck (railing). The guys who make all of this, they did it exactly right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the house, the original heart\u2011redwood trim and paneling were preserved and, in many cases, painted on the advice of Haley\u2019s designer, Virginia Scofield.<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll these things here are heart redwood \u2014 I\u2019m talking 10-year, kiln-dried heart redwood,\u201d he said. \u201cI said, \u2018I\u2019m not painting that, I\u2019ll stain it, but I\u2019m not going to paint it,\u2019\u201d he remembered. \u201cFinally, I caved in, and she was right \u2014 it looks better painted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><!--]--><!--[--><\/p>\n<p>Although the architecture reads 1902, the large modern kitchen is designed for 21st\u2011century cooking and gathering.
