In May, Grover Beach resident Regina Carlos attended a co-worker\u2019s birthday party with her partner and their new puppy.<\/p>\n

As Beanz, a 5-month-old maltipoo, played with another dog in the front yard, he snuck something into his mouth.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThings went south when my puppy got a hold of a mushroom\u201d during the May 15 party, Carlos wrote in an email to The Tribune. \u201cIt was taken out of his mouth immediately but that didn\u2019t stop him from getting sick …\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Later that night, Beanz started vomiting.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

After the pup stopped eating and drinking, Carlos and her partner rushed Beanz to Cerro Alto Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital in San Luis Obispo.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, they posted a picture of the mushroom Beanz had eaten on the Facebook group Poisons Help; Emergency Identification for Mushrooms & Plants.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Commenters quickly identified it as a death cap mushroom \u2014 the same fungi that\u2019s sickened scores of Californians.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On May 18, after spending thousands of dollars on medical care, Carlos and her partner said goodbye to Beanz.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Since November, 50 people had been hospitalized in California after accidentally picking and eating poisonous wild mushrooms,<\/u> according to the California Department of Public Health. That includes 17 reported mushroom poisonings in 2026 alone.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Four people have died in California as a result of the amatoxin poisoning outbreak.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In addition to being harmful to humans, certain types of mushrooms can be poisonous to pets if consumed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what to know:<\/p>\n

What are dangers of death cap mushrooms?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Death cap mushrooms \u2014 scientific name Amanita phalloides \u2014 can cause severe liver damage leading to death, experts said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

With their yellowish caps and off-white stems, the mushrooms are \u201ceasily confused for safe-to-eat, lookalike mushrooms,\u201d experts said, and can be found growing among them.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The deadly fungi are found in California, Oregon and Washington state.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cDeath cap mushrooms are still poisonous even after cooking, boiling, freezing or drying,\u201d the California Public Health Department said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Even a single bite can be toxic.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Experts advise against foraging for wild mushrooms because of the health risks.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Are mushrooms harmful for pets?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cStore-bought mushrooms used for food for humans won\u2019t cause issues for pets,\u201d the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said on its website.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The majority of wild mushrooms are non-toxic as well, the nonprofit organization said.<\/p>\n

However, 1% of mushroom species are \u201chighly toxic and can cause life-threatening problems for pets\u201d if ingested, the ASPCA said.<\/p>\n

Which toxic species can poison dogs and cats?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

In the United States, the \u201cmost fatal\u201d types of mushrooms belong to the Amantina, Galerina and Lepiota genuses, veterinarian Veronica Higgs wrote in a PetMD article in 2023.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Death cap mushrooms are part of the Amanita genus. So are Western destroying angel mushroom, which have creamy white caps and white gills.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Both mushrooms grow near oak trees and look like edible mushroom species but are highly toxic<\/u>, the California Department of Public Health said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Together, these Amanita mushrooms are responsible for most human cases of mushroom poisoning.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There are poisonous mushrooms<\/u> across California, according to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District in Los Altos.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The environmental preservation organization said Galerina and Lepiota mushrooms also have toxic traits.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Galerina mushrooms have the same toxins<\/u> as death cap mushrooms. The small, brown fungi have rounded caps and can be found on rotted damp logs, the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Yellow-gilled Lepiota mushrooms typically grow near Monterey cypress trees, the Global Fungal Red List Initiative said, calling the species \u201ca very rare fungus<\/u> with specific habitat requirement.\u201d<\/p>\n

What are signs my pet ate a toxic mushroom?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

VCA Animal Hospitals said the \u201cseverity of mushroom-induced illness\u201d depends on the type and number of mushrooms you pet ingested.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes a pet may have mild gastrointestinal upset\u201d such as vomiting or diarrhea, the veterinary care network said. \u201cOther times, a pet becomes extremely sick and requires hospitalization.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ingesting poisonous mushrooms can lead to liver failure, kidney damage and neurological issues.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Symptoms can show up in 30 minutes or be delayed for up to 12 hours.<\/p>\n

    If you suspect your dog has ingested a mushroom,<\/u> GuideDogs.com said you should follow these steps:<\/p>\n
