Kings County District 1 Supervisor candidate Garrett Gilcrease was in the lead on Primary Election Night on Tuesday, according to early results.<\/p>\n

Gilcrease, a fourth-generation farmer and agriculture professional from Lemoore, had 51.05% of the votes as of 10:03 p.m. in the second election report. Martin Chavez<\/u>, who was born and raised in Kings County, works as a farmer relations director for Pacific Farm Management Inc., had 34.73 % of the votes.<\/p>\n

Stefanie Silveira Chavez<\/u>, a real estate agent and the sister-in-law to former U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer,<\/u>had 9.79 % of the votes in the race to replace longtime District 1 Supervisor Joe Neves who did not seek reelection.<\/p>\n

Neves, 68, was first elected to office in November 1994 and is one of the Valley\u2019s longest-serving supervisors. He was last reelected in the general election in 2022 after facing two challengers in the June primary and getting 47.79% of the vote.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

A total of 2,548 votes had been submitted in the initial count. The Kings County registrar of voters said it is too early to know whether any of the candidates will win the race outright without a runoff. There is a difference of 435 votes between Gilcrease and Martin Chavez. The county next report will be on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Candidates must receive over 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff. If no candidate gets a majority of the vote, the top two will advance to the general election in November.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

District 1 has 28,543 residents in a 131-square-mile area that includes Lemoore and Stratford.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Supervisors Doug Verboon and Rusty Robinson run unopposed in the District 3 and District 4 races.<\/p>\n
