College sports leaders are considering an all-out ban on facing the Red Raiders amid a gambling controversy embroiling the program. Athletic departments have instructed teams to avoid scheduling Texas Tech across all sports. And entire conferences – including the Red Raiders’ own Big 12 – have discussed not playing Texas Tech.<\/p>\n

This outrage stems from the injunction Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby received on Monday, permitting him to play college football in 2026 despite an extensive gambling history that includes betting on his own team. That violation of NCAA policy led to a loss of eligibility for the highly coveted signal-caller, who transferred to Texas Tech in December. That is, until a Texas judge granted Sorsby an injunction to play as planned.<\/p>\n

The NCAA is appealing this decision.<\/p>\n

Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor and TCU athletic director Mark Buddie told ESPN there has been discussion about Big 12 teams not playing the Red Raiders this season. The Big Ten is reportedly mulling a league-wide ban on playing Texas Tech across all sports, according to The Athletic<\/em>. And Georgia and Nebraska have already taken steps internally to bar their teams from scheduling the Red Raiders in the future, per the same report.<\/p>\n

It’s difficult to envision what Big 12 teams not playing Texas Tech would mean for the season ahead. The Red Raiders are the reigning conference champions and the favorites to defend their title, especially with Sorsby set to be available for the meat of the schedule. (The same court order that paves the way for Sorsby to suit up for the Red Raiders in 2026 also imposes a two-game suspension.)<\/p>\n

There might be more leeway for Texas Tech’s future nonconference opponents to back out of games down the road, though.<\/p>\n

Prominent Red Raiders booster Cody Campbell offered to buy out the Sept. 5 game against Abilene Christian in hopes of freeing up a spot to play in-state rival and former Big 12 foe Texas. The Wildcats had no comment on the matter and referred to their previous statement: “We are planning on playing Texas Tech as scheduled on Sept. 5 in Lubbock. We look forward to playing the Red Raiders barring any changes.”<\/p>\n

Texas Tech is set to play Oregon State on Sept. 12 while Sorsby serves the second and final game of his suspension. He is set to return on Sept. 18 against Houston in what is easily the biggest game of the season for the Red Raiders and perhaps the game of the year in the Big 12.<\/p>\n
