A top boating supply store is shuttering stores across the nation, including in California, after filing for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n

West Marine is closing 59 stores<\/u> across the United States, with five of those in California, the company said. It did not say when the stores will close.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The company is the largest specialty retailer<\/u> of boating supplies, fishing tackle and marine gear in the nation. Founded in 1968 in California as a mail-order nylon rope supply business, it is now headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the company history said.<\/p>\n

It has more than 230 stores located in 38 states and Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

Which West Marine stores in California are closing?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

California has 17 stores overall, with five of them closing. Those closing are in Chula Vista, Monterey, Oceanside, Pittsburg and Redding, West Marine said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Customers can still pick up orders placed before June 12 at a closing store, the company said. Gift cards can be used up to the closure date, online or at other West Marine stores.<\/p>\n

West Marine will be left with 12 stores in California, including a store at 9500 Micron Ave. in Rosemont in the Sacramento area as well as the West Marine Santa Barbara Harbor store at 132C Harbor Way.<\/p>\n

Why is West Marine closing stores?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

The company filed for bankruptcy restructuring<\/u> May 17, Verita Global said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In the filing, West Marine listed more than 100,000 creditors<\/u>, between $500 million and $1 billion in assets and between $500 million and $1 billion in liabilities, USA Today said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The store closures will \u201calign our store footprint with our current business needs,\u201d the company said in a statement to the publication.<\/p>\n
