What are age requirements for leaving a child home alone?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

Unlike some states, California does not set a legal minimum age for when a child can be left home alone.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Instead, the decision is left to parents and guardians.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no sure sign to let you know when your child is ready to be left home alone,\u201d the California Department of Education said.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Rather than focusing on a specific age, the state department said, parents should consider their child\u2019s maturity level, judgment and ability to handle unexpected situations.<\/p>\n

How can I tell if my child is ready to stay home alone?<\/h2>\n

<\/p>\n

While many child development experts suggest that ages 11 or 12 might be appropriate for staying home alone, readiness varies depending on the child, according to HealthyChildren.org, the parenting website of the American Academy of Pediatrics.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important to recognize that the right time will vary by family, so trust your instincts,\u201d HealthyChildren.org said. \u201cWith some advance planning and preparation, this milestone can be a great way to build your child\u2019s independence and confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The California Department of Education recommends looking beyond age and determining whether your child can act responsibly, make sound decisions and respond appropriately when something unexpected happens.<\/p>\n
