2 firefighters hospitalized after fire spreads across floors in downtown Sacramento

Two firefighters were hospitalized with heat exhaustion after battling a fire that spread across multiple floors of a downtown Sacramento building early Thursday, the Sacramento Fire Department said.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire broke out just after 4 a.m. in a large mixed-use commercial and residential building in the 900 block of Eighth Street, Sacramento Fire Department Capt. Justin Sylvia said. Arriving crews found flames on multiple floors of the building.

Firefighters initially believed the building was vacant, but they escorted one person who was inside to safety, Sylvia said.

Crews extinguished the blaze. The Sacramento Fire Department continued to investigate the cause Thursday.
