Three hikers were rescued Sunday night after they got lost in the wilderness along the Big Sur coast.

A Monterey County Sheriff’s Office search-and-rescue team and Big Sur Fire responded after receiving a satellite 911 call from three hikers who became lost in Limekiln State Park in California. One of the hikers also was experiencing a medical emergency, according to a news release.
Over an hour-and-a-half, seven members of the search-and-rescue team hiked 2.5 miles at 2,000 feet of elevation into Limekiln State Park, clearing a trail using machetes and chainsaws due to overgrowth.
At 12:30 a.m., the team located the three hikers and requested an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter to airlift the trio to a safe location, where they were turned over to Big Sur Fire and ambulance personnel, the news release said.

The search-and-rescue team then hiked back on foot, completing its mission at 4 a.m. on Monday.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reminded hikers exploring the backcountry to prepare before heading out, including using established trails, carrying a GPS-enabled device or other reliable means of navigation, hiking with others whenever possible and letting a family member or friend know where they are going and when they expect to return, the news release said.
