43-year-old Folsom State Prison inmate dies after being found unresponsive

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death of a Folsom State Prison inmate found unresponsive in his cell last weekend, state corrections officials said.

John Joseph Pine III, 43, was found in his cell about 4 p.m. Saturday by prison staff, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said. Pine, who was serving a 21-year sentence for assault with a deadly weapon and infliction of great bodily injury, was alone in the cell, prison officials said in a statement.

Pine arrived at Folsom State Prison in November 2018.

Corrections officers tried to revive Pine and called emergency personnel, who took him to a prison triage area, where treatment continued, officials said.

Emergency medical personnel pronounced Pine dead about 6:30 p.m. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine the preliminary cause of death.
