Now, the Stockton native and Lincoln High School alum has a chance to play for the team he grew up rooting for.
The 49ers signed the 13-year veteran to their practice squad on Wednesday amid their growing list of injuries at receiver. The team lost Demarcus Robinson to a high-ankle sprain on Sunday and is a candidate for injured reserve, where he would join De’Zhaun Stribling (ankle), Christian Kirk (calf) and Ricky Pearsall (knee), who was lost for the season at the start of the training camp.
Kirk is eligible to return Week 5 for a road game against Seattle. Stribling isn’t expected back until November after having surgery to repair a deltoid ligament rupture.
Cooks could be a quick study after playing in a similar offense when he was with the Rams and head coach Sean McVay in 2018 and 2019. He spent last season with New Orleans and Buffalo and combined for 24 catches for 279 yards.
Cooks was said to have multiple suitors before deciding on the 49ers, where he ultimately decided he thought coach Kyle Shanahan gave him the best chance to succeed.

“His ability and what he does as an offensive play caller, I’ve always been fond about, even from afar,” Cooks said.
The 49ers kept Mike Evans (hip) out of practice Wednesday, and it doesn’t appear the injury is serious enough to miss time. Deebo Samuel has been a rare Iron Man at 49ers headquarters playing in both games so far after not missing a single practice during training camp. The 49ers’ next receivers up would Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins, who has been inactive the first two games of the season.
Shanahan was asked when Cooks could be thrown into mix and responded, “I have no idea. It’s only my first day seeing him, so I’m not sure.
“But, we’re down guys so as soon as he’s ready. We usually get five guys up for game day, so as soon as he can show he’s one of those five.”
