A recent Bleacher Report article named Kansas City Chiefs rookie Cyrus Allen as one of eight overlooked NFL rookies most likely to generate major training camp buzz, with training camp starting in just a couple of weeks. For the past few seasons, it has been evident that Kansas City has lacked talent at the receiver position, which has significantly affected the team’s big-play game. Kristopher Knox of BR argues that although Allen was not a top receiver in his draft class, he could very well be an early contributor in the slot option.

Allen is known for his middle field energy
As pick No. 176, Cyrus Allen was selected by Kansas City in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL draft. The wide receiver averaged 16.2 receiving yards across his entire four-year collegiate career from Louisiana Tech to his final season at Cincinnati. Allen started at Louisiana Tech in the 2022-23 season, where he caught 22 receptions for 500 yards his first year and 46 passes for 778 yards his second. Allen transferred to Texas A&M for his third year, where he caught 18 passes for 269 yards.
Following a disappointing season as an Aggie, Allen had his best statistical season his senior year after transferring one more time to Cincinnati. Allen caught 13 touchdown receptions, setting the school’s single-season record. He had a total of 51 receptions for 674 yards.
Following the draft, ESPN’s Nate Taylor said that Allen is known for his production and energy in the midfield, and that the Chiefs will rely on Allen to be a capable option as a returner, with his experience on special teams. Kansas City’s receiving team is still thin due to both injury and lack of talent. However, after the draft, Athlon Sports said that Cyrus Allen was the only significant offseason addition.
The Chiefs will need Allen’s talent to improve their passing record
So far in the off-season, Allen is generating national buzz. He is also being noticed within the team and program for his route running and ball skills.

On June 11, Chiefs’ wide receiver Xavier Worthy told reporters at a press conference that Cyrus Allen is an “electric route runner” and said that he has explosion and is a smart player. “Cyrus definitely has a special ability to him,” Worthy said. “I think he’s going to be special for us this year.”
Boy, do the Chiefs need a special player. In the previous 2025 season, the Chiefs not only didn’t make the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, but also finished dead last in the league in play-action passing yards. Obviously, a large part of having a better upcoming season depends a lot on the health of Patrick Mahomes, but emerging players, including Cyrus Allen, could be critical to improving Kansas City’s statistics and overall game.
Allen specifically will hopefully be the key to elevating the Chiefs’ receiving team, especially with Worthy still listed as questionable. Only time and training camp will tell.
Kansas City reports for training camp on Wednesday, July 29, where hopefully Allen can showcase his talent, and fans can get a glimpse into what the 2026 season may look like.
