Jake Fraley’s return to the Tampa Bay Rays has been delayed after the veteran outfielder suffered a setback during his rehab assignment. According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Fraley experienced renewed groin discomfort related to his hernia surgery while playing for Triple-A Durham and will be evaluated by a doctor.

The setback came after Fraley had progressed from the Florida Complex League to Triple-A as he worked toward returning from the 10-day injured list.
Instead of nearing activation, the 30-year-old now faces additional testing before the Rays determine the next step in his recovery.

Fraley appeared in limited action for Tampa Bay before landing on the injured list, batting .232 with two home runs, five RBIs, three stolen bases and a .690 OPS. The Rays had hoped he would provide additional outfield depth during the second half of the season.

The injury is another hurdle for a player who has battled health issues throughout his career. Until doctors determine the cause of the discomfort, the club is expected to proceed cautiously with his rehabilitation.
Despite Fraley’s setback, Tampa Bay enters the All-Star break atop the American League East with a 56-37 record, holding a four-game lead over the New York Yankees. The Rays have overcome multiple injuries this season while continuing to receive strong production from key contributors across the roster.
Fraley’s timeline remains uncertain, but the evaluation should provide greater clarity on when he can resume baseball activities. For now, Tampa Bay will continue relying on its current outfield mix as it prepares for the second half.
