Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden is no stranger to the broadcasting booth.
The former Bucs and Raiders head coach famously served as the game analyst for ESPN’s “Monday Night Football,” working alongside Mike Tirico, who served as the play-by-play announcer. Gruden was highly entertaining in the broadcasting booth, known for his quarterback insight, his “Gruden’s Grinders” awards and more.

Gruden, who has been out of coaching since his NFL emails saga several years ago, has been working in sports media, partnering up with Barstool Sports. But Gruden is now eyeing a new job.
Gruden wants to return to the NFL broadcasting booth, but as a play-by-play man, not a color commentator.
The former NFL head coach says he’s learned a lot from Tirico, who was his on-air partner for several years. Gruden believes that it’d be a lot of fun trying to call the game as a play-by-play man.

Gruden appeared on The Ira Kaufman Podcast, via JoeBucsFan.com, and spoke about his broadcasting goals.

“I was a broadcaster for nine years,” Gruden said. “I want to be play-by-play. You know, Frank Gifford, he transitioned into the play-by-play role. I would like to transition. I had nine years of watching these guys – [Mike] Tirico. And I’d like to give that a shot, man.”
Gruden isn’t wrong in saying that several former color commentators have switched into the play-by-play role.
Of course, those are pretty hard roles to come by in the National Football League. But, maybe Gruden can get a play-by-play opportunity at a lower level and work his way up.

It would be fun to watch, that’s for sure.
