Wednesday’s World Cup semifinal matchup between England and Argentina is going to be an historic one and FIFA is apparently willing to make a last minute change to ensure it gets immortalized.

According to reports, Argentina have requested and been granted permission to wear their blue away kits against England.
“Confirmed: Argentina will play against England in the blue jersey for the 2026 World Cup semifinals,” reporter Gaston Edul revealed on Sunday, translated from Spanish via X.
While they are best known for wearing their light blue and white vertical stripes, Argentina have a special history of wearing the solid blue kits.
In their five meetings against England in prior World Cups, Argentina have only one two of those encounters. But both of them came when Argentina was wearing the solid blue.
Argentina vs. England
The most memorable of those two wins by far was the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal game, better known as the “Hand of God,” where the late-great Diego Maradona scored twice – once with a hand ball that went uncalled and the other where he dribbled past five defenders for the “Goal of the Century.”

The other Argentina win came in a penalty shootout in the 1998 Round of 16.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if FIFA specifically allowed this so that Argentina megastar Lionel Messi has a chance to emulate Maradona’s epic encounter with England.
But it hasn’t been all Argentina all the time when they face England in the World Cup. Their first World Cup meeting came in 1962, with England coming out on top in a 3-1 win.
The following year, England beat them 1-0 in the quarterfinals en route to winning their first and only World Cup title.
The two aforementioned Argentina wins took place after that and evened up the series. But England got back in front of Argentina again in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup.
Will England get their first win over Argentina’s all blue kit, or will the good luck charm continue to be lucky for Messi and company?
