Michigan Announces AD Warde Manuel Will Step Down

The University of Michigan has announced that longtime athletic director Warde Manuel will be stepping down at the end of the year.

Michigan announced on Monday morning that Manuel, who helped lead the football and men’s basketball programs to national championships in recent years, will be stepping down from his position at the end of the year.

Earlier this month, reports surfaced, suggesting that Manuel was about to be out at Michigan, due to his handling of the Sherrone Moore scandal, among other things. Michigan clapped back at those reports, suggesting that they were not accurate. Now, on Monday morning, Michigan has confirmed that Manuel will be stepping down.

ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel confirmed the news on Monday morning.

The University of Michigan confirmed the decision in a brief statement released on Monday morning, July 20, as well.

Michigan confirms Manuel’s future with a statement

Michigan confirmed that Manuel will be stepping down from his position at the end of the year.

“At this time, the university does not have any additional public statements planned regarding these matters, nor does the university plan to release any associated documents. We can confirm, however, that Director of Athletics Warde Manuel will step down at the end of the calendar year and a search for a new AD will be conducted,” a Michigan spokesman said in a statement on Monday.

Michigan, meanwhile, is a little more than a month away from opening the 2026 college football season.

The Wolverines are now led by former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, who took over for Moore following his firing at the school.

Moore was ousted following a relationship scandal with a staff member, that ultimately led to his arrest.

The Wolverines are expected to release the full findings of an investigation into the scandal.
