Bryson DeChambeau was hit with a two-stroke penalty for improving “the area of his intended swing” in tall grass on the fifth hole of The Open Championship on Friday.

Rory McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, felt that DeChambeau’s penalty was “obvious” while speaking with reporters following the second round.
“As soon as he made the step into the ball, we all sort of looked at each other, and we were like, ‘That didn’t seem right,'” McIlroy said Saturday. “Then when I heard that he was called in by the rules officials, I think it was pretty obvious for why.”
DeChambeau was arguing that his actions were accidental. However, The R&A’s executive director of governance, Grant Moir, said in a statement Friday that the rule “applies even when the action is accidental, as it was in Bryson’s case.”
DeChambeau ended up falling out of contention as the tournament went into the weekend, as Ryan Fox of Australia ended up winning the fourth and final major of the golf season.
However, according to a new report, DeChambeau asked for President Trump to get involved in his controversy.

DeChambeau begged for President Trump’s help, per a report
According to a report from The Telegraph, Bryson DeChambeau “warned officials at The Open that he was ready to call President Trump in the tense stand-off that saw the American hit with a two-shot penalty for ‘inadvertently improving his lie.'”
President Trump, of course, did intervene during the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, urging officials to review the red card suspension given to Folarin Balogun. Ultimately, Balogun was allowed to play in a Round of 16 loss to Belgium.
It doesn’t sound like President Trump did much of anything in reaction to DeChambeau’s request at the Open Championship.
DeChambeau ended up finishing T-14 on Sunday at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, six shots behind the eventual winner.
