The Sacramento Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday at an undisclosed location within the city of Sacramento.

The purpose of DUI checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from roadways. Checkpoint locations are determined by evaluating impaired driving-related crash data, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department wrote in a news release.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Anna Mahoney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Drivers are not only impaired by alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana may also interfere with their ability to drive safely. While medical and recreational marijuana use is legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
First-time DUI offenders typically face about $13,500 in fines and penalties and a suspended driver’s license.
