Have the Cleveland Browns found their long-term answer at quarterback in Shedeur Sanders? That’s a question that some NFL fans are asking during training camp.

Sanders started seven games for the Browns in 2025, completing 56.6% of his pass attempts for 1,400 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. It wasn’t an awful rookie season, but he left a lot to be desired.
That being said, ESPN’s Jordan Rodgers is still holding out hope that Sanders will develop into a franchise quarterback for the Browns.
“I think he can be a franchise quarterback in this league,” Rodgers said. “Absolutely! He’s always been exceptional between the ears – his ability to understand defenses, know where the football should go, operate a pro-style system. I think because he didn’t have much around him at Colorado, he developed some bad habits with his footwork. His urgency at times needs to be better.”
Even though Rodgers has faith in Sanders, he’s not willing to make a bold prediction for the 2026 season. All he said was that Cleveland needs its young quarterback to either step up to the plate or lead them to a high draft pick.

“Best-case scenario for Cleveland is he’s either really good or really bad, because they got to figure out what the future is going to be with their first-round draft picks next year.”
Competing for the Week 1 job.
Despite all the hype surrounding Sanders, he’s not a lock to start Week 1 for the Browns. He’s currently competing with Deshaun Watson for the No. 1 spot on the depth chart.
“We’re both trying to be the best version of ourselves we could be. So we’re not going to let anything get in between of that. So it’s a level of respect that we all in the quarterback room have for each other,” Sanders said, via Cleveland.com. “And we’re not really emotional when it comes to things that we can’t control. We mainly focus on and thrive on getting better in the work every day. So if I like something he’s doing, I ask. If he likes something I do, then [he] asks. It’s conversation, and that’s what’s most effective.”
Sanders will need to outshine Watson during camp and the preseason if he wants to start on Sept. 13 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
