The Indiana Fever are staying in the Pacific Northwest this week for a second road game, this time against the Portland Fire. And much like their game against the Seattle Storm, this one will also feature a Sophie Cunningham rally.

According to Jackson Thompson of Fox News, organizers of a rally have confirmed that they will be holding one at the Moda Center to show their support for Cunningham. The group has already created a flyer with the tagline “Let’s keep the momentum going.”
“A second Sophie Cunningham rally has been planned for tomorrow night’s Indiana Fever game in Portland against the Fire, an organizer has told me.
Sophie Cunningham the Rallying Cry
Cunningham ranks among the very few WNBA players to openly speak out against transgender athletes in women’s sports and she is by far the most popular to do so. Her publicly expressed opinions have become a rallying point by other people who similarly oppose the presence of transgender athletes in the sports, resulting in the aforementioned rallies and even poster signs of support inside the games.
Of course, as with every contentious issue, there has been pushback. Earlier this week during the Fever-Storm game, one of the Storm’s minority owners confronted a pair of teenage fans over their support for Cunningham.

The responses to Thompson’s announcement alone has people wondering what kind of reception Cunningham will get and how the league should respond:
“Portland people aren’t as crazy as Seattle, but not much better,” one user remarked.
“Fever should release Cunningham,” another suggested.
“This getting hysterical. When an opposing player shows up and a rally is held for them. Good for Sophie! She is the Pied Piper,” wrote a third.
“Trade her.”
“I’m not sure this is good for the team.”
The WNBA is clearly having a tough time reconciling the fact that one of its most popular players doesn’t share all of the same political and social viewpoints of its other stars.
