On Sunday at 8:28 p.m. the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA released an updated extreme heat warning valid from Monday 10 a.m. until Tuesday 8 p.m. for Northern Ventura County Mountains.

“There is a high risk for dangerous heat illness, especially for sensitive groups like the very young, the very old, those without air conditioning, and those active outdoors,” describes the NWS.

This warning is in effect until Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Ways to stay safe in the heat according to the NWS

  • Consume plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Seek shelter: Stay indoors in an air-conditioned room to keep cool.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
  • Ensure child and pet safety: Take every precaution to never leave young children and pets alone in vehicles, especially in extreme heat when car interiors can quickly become hazardous.
  • Take extra precautions outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, be sure to take additional safety measures.
  • Find the right time: Consider rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening if possible.
  • Know the red flags: Understand the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to stay comfortable.

For a safer outdoor work environment, follow the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)’s guidance by scheduling regular rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned places. If anyone shows signs of heat illness, promptly move them to a cool, shaded area. In an emergency, call 911.
