Ford extends its lead as most-recalled car brand of 2026
Ford has recalled almost 50,000 units of its best-selling F-150 and F-250 pickup trucks for a rearview camera image that may be obstructed on the vehicle’s display. The problem takes Ford’s total recall count to 63 for 2026, over twice as many as the next car brand. Affected Ford pickups range from the 2021 to 2026 model years and all are equipped with the same Sync infotainment system. Here’s a breakdown of the recall and what owners need to know.

Ford F-Series Backup Camera Recall
The total number of Ford pickups involved in this recall is 47,587 units, split as follows:
- 2021-2023 Ford F-150 (24,408 units)
- 2023-2026 Ford F-250 Super Duty (23,179 units)
These specific vehicles are equipped with the Sync infotainment system with the eight-inch display; other versions of the pickup have 12-inch infotainment displays but are not affected by the same issue.
In the published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford says that a software error could cause the image from the rearview camera to be obstructed by the infotainment home screen menu when selecting reverse.
“If a customer leaves the camera “Views” menu open on the SYNC 4 screen and shifts the vehicle into Reverse, the menu overlay does not auto-dismiss,” states the recall report. “As a result, the menu persists on the screen and will remain on until either (a) the user selects a view or closes the menu, or (b) the vehicle is shifted to Drive and speed exceeds 5 mph.”
Based on this description, it sounds as if drivers can still bring up the camera image, but it would require manually closing the menu.

What Owners Should Do Now
Ford will be mailing interim owner notification letters between August 17 and 21. These will be followed by remedy owner notification letters between September 21 and October 23. Ford anticipates that the software update to resolve the issue will be available sometime in September 2026.

As of July 31, owners can use their vehicle identification numbers to check if their Ford truck is involved in the recall; this can be done on the NHTSA’s website. For more information, owners can also reach out to Ford’s customer care at 1-866-436-7332.
In the meantime, drivers of these vehicles are encouraged to exercise caution when reversing or to manually close the “Views” menu, which should bring up the rearview camera feed as it is meant to be displayed.

Ford F-150 Recalls Keep Piling Up, But Quality is Improving
Ford’s recall records have consistently made headlines over the last two or so years as the brand battles to improve quality. It argues that many of these recalls have been proactive, with efforts to fix potential faults before drivers experience them. The F-150 has not been exempt from the high recall rate. There are signs that things are starting to move in the right direction for Ford. The 2026 Ford F-150 will soon go out of production, but it only has one recall to its name-far fewer than any recent model. Ford also ranked first for mass-market brands in the recent JD Power Initial Quality Study, which the automaker credits to stricter protocols and more extreme vehicle testing.
While the latest recall may be an inconvenience for almost 50,000 Ford pickup owners, the brand’s newer models are showing signs of being more robust.
