Yosemite National Park and the Pacific Crest Trail rank among the most dangerous trails in the U.S., according to a recent study of hiking injuries by KURU footwear.

Yosemite National Park’s Half-Dome has had 13 fatalities since 2005. In 2023, 20 incidents that required rescue were reported at the rock formation. The John Muir trail, which connects to the trail that leads to Half Dome, averages one fatality every two to three years, according to the study.
Roughly 10% of hikers experience injuries on the Pacific Crest Trail due to its diverse terrain. There are also one to two deaths per year on the 2,650 mile trail that runs from Mexico to Canada.
The ankle is the most commonly injured part of the body for hikers, making up about 42% of all hiking injuries, accordigdn to KURU. Female hikers represent 72% of all ankle-related injuries. Head injuries from falls or slipping on uneven trails make up 13.4% of all hiking injuries. Casual, less experienced hikers account for 60% of injuries.

Outdoor guides note it’s important to rest and hydrate during hikes, as fatigue and feeling lethargic are more likely to lead to injuries. Extreme weather conditions such as rain, snow, or heat can increase the likelihood of dehydration or heat exhaustion.
Don’t just rely on your phone to help navigate either. The KURU report noted that some 44% of hikers don’t carry a map or a compass, and having either on hand can help avoid getting lost in the wilderness. It’s also helpful to carry a signaling device so emergency responders can find you.
