Recent Real Madrid signing Yan Diomande revealed he is already feeling the pressure of playing for the 15-time European champions, admitting it is “tougher” to live up to the demands of the new badge on his chest.

After a breakout season at RB Leipzig, Diomande joined Los Blancos in a deal worth an initial €125 million ($144.3 million), with €15 million ($17.3 million) in add-ons available that would make him the most expensive player in club history.
The 19-year-old winger inked a seven-year contract with Real Madrid and is expected to complete an attack that features Vinícius Júnior, Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. Diomande is already training with his new teammates and on Tuesday, gave his first interview since joining José Mourinho’s ranks.
“I’m proud and happy because this was my dream,” he told Real Madrid TV. “When I was a child, I wanted to play for the biggest clubs in the world. I’m grateful to be here, and I’m happy and proud. I want my family to be proud of me.
“This is the biggest club in the world, and everyone wants to come here. I’m grateful to be here, and I want to share my happiness with everyone. I want to be part of the team’s triumphs.”
When asked of the demands that come with being a Real Madrid player, Diomande replied: “It’s different. This is tougher. It’s normal because it’s the biggest club. You need to work harder than at other clubs to be the best in the world. And that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Diomande Reveals Who Influenced His Real Madrid Move
Diomande was largely linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool this summer before Real Madrid swooped in and snagged his signature. The decision to chose the Bernabéu as his new home was seemingly an easy one for the Côte d’Ivoire international, especially after one conversation in particular.
“I want to thank the coach because we had a conversation beforehand, and I’m here thanks to him and the club, of course,” Diomande said. “I’m happy. Thank you for this signing, and thank you to the club and the coach for believing in me.
“When Real Madrid calls you, you can’t say no. It’s that simple.”
Diomande went on to share his hopes and expectations for his time in a white shirt: “To have many successes with the club and help the team win everything. I am very happy to be here and I hope to be very successful with the team. Hala Madrid!”

Diomande Cannot Afford a Slow Start
Patience is rarely afforded to any at Real Madrid, but Diomande will especially feel the pressure from the home crowd early on. Any player that comes with such an eye-watering price tag is expected to produce immediately under the lights at the Bernabéu, no matter his age.
What makes the situation even worse for Diomande is the club’s recent failures. Back-to-back seasons without a major trophy has fans attacking even the team’s biggest stars, and the new signing will not be immune to such treatment if Los Blancos once again fail to live up to their standard.
It’s a lot for such a young player to shoulder considering Diomande only has one full season of top-flight soccer under his belt. The forward made 10 first team appearances at Leganés in 2024–25 before securing a move to Leipzig, where he recorded 13 goals and nine assists in 36 appearances last season.
Diomande’s campaign in Germany and his staggering potential ultimately earned him a move to the Spanish capital, where he will now command the right wing. He will have to get reacclimated with La Liga, while also preparing to make his Champions League, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup debuts.
After such little production from the right wing in the last two seasons, Real Madrid will be desperate for Diomande to hit the ground running and develop chemistry with Trent Alexander-Arnold to finally bring some width to an attack too dependent on the left side.
