With the potential starting lineup that combined four All-Stars, the new-look Philadelphia 76ers are entering the 2026-27 season with enormous expectations. It is easy to understand why so many people already view them as championship favorites.

The roster has everything a contender can ask for.
Tyrese Maxey, arguably the fastest player in the league, is coming off a career-best year in which he averaged 28.3 points per game. Then there is LeBron James, who, at the age of 41, isn’t just among the Top-20 players in the league but also averaged 23.2 points per game over the 2026 playoffs.
Then, there is Jaylen Brown, who is coming off averaging a career-high 28.7 points per game while playing for the Boston Celtics last season.
On paper, this team looks almost unfair. But history has repeatedly shown that stacking stars does not automatically create a championship team.
The Brooklyn Nets, for instance, featured Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden, yet injuries and overlapping roles prevented them from winning. That is why the 76ers’ President Mike Gansey recognizes that Philly has to avoid becoming another example of too many cooks spoiling the broth.
“My job is to build the best team and try to get as much talent in here as I can,” Gansey
“But also, two, I kinda look at the usage thing, like Jaylen Brown’s last year with Boston, he had to be “that guy.’… Last year, especially these guys (LeBron and JB) had to be No. 1 guys. And now obviously with three maybe four, you know, number one guys on the same team, it’s going to take some time.”
Gansey is confident in his team
The good news is that this Sixers team has something most star-studded teams don’t have: players who understand sacrifice. LeBron has already demonstrated that he is willing to adjust his role when necessary.
Last season, he averaged 20.9 points and 7.2 assists while willingly playing the third-option role behind Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic.
Jaylen Brown has displayed a similar mentality throughout his tenure with the Boston Celtics.

Despite averaging over 20.0 points over the past seven seasons, yet never getting credited for the Celtics’ consistent dominance in the East, Brown never created internal friction. Moreover, last season, when he was in the form of his life, he allowed Jayson Tatum to make his way into the team and average 21.8 points per game towards the business end of the regular season.
That is why Gansey remains optimistic that many players are willing to sacrifice their “alpha” tag for the greater good of the team.
“I’d rather have the talent and kind of figure it out,” Gansey added. “We have so much talent and the guys want to sacrifice… we got to get to a practice first to see how this works.”

The 76ers have massive pressure on them
That mentality could prove extremely valuable in Philly. The 76ers have plenty of players who can score. The real question is whether everyone can accept that they will not always be the first option.
Now, that becomes an even more important question because Philly will be under an enormous microscope. Having LBJ on the roster means every bad stretch will become a national storyline, every loss will raise chemistry questions, every scoring drought will spark skepticism about his ability, and anything less than a championship will likely be considered a bust.
But LeBron has spent much of his career showing that winning matters more to him than individual accolades. Similarly, Brown has shown he can sacrifice touches for the team’s cohesion.
Will this roster work? It is what remains to be seen. Surely, Gansey is all-in on believing it will.
