Nagy spoke about working with Dart, explaining that the second-year quarterback’s struggles against Dennard Wilson’s exotic defenses are part of the natural “highs and lows” of his growth.
Dart is in his first full season as the Giants’ starting quarterback. He started just 12 games as a rookie, despite finishing fifth in NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, and is now working in his second new offense in as many NFL seasons.
Matt Nagy: Jaxson Dart ‘Can’t Get Too High or Too Low’
Dart has all the tools a team would look for in a quarterback, but he’s still raw at just 23 years old. Fortunately, Nagy is experienced enough to help him through the growing pains.
“There’s going to be highs and lows through this process,” Nagy said Tuesday. “We talk about it as a staff – we have to make sure that as we go through this journey, we never get too high and we never get too low.”
Giants wide receiver Darnell Mooney said Monday that Dart’s struggles stemmed from frustration with the teammates around him. Nagy agreed that Dart has learned quickly, though he’s still working through some of the offense’s finer points, an issue that was evident in Tuesday’s “below-average” practice.

“One of the most impressive parts of [Dart’s] game right now is the volume we’ve given him to get in and out of the huddle and some of the things we’re doing, and he’s aced that,” Nagy said. “Now, there’s other areas that he needs to get better at, but we need to help him as coaches too and do our job.”
Jaxson Dart Will ‘Be Better in the Long Run’ Going Against Dennard Wilson’s Defense
Another part of Dart’s struggles has been facing Dennard Wilson’s exotic blitzes and schemes. Nagy acknowledged the complexity, especially for a young quarterback, but believes it will benefit Dart in the long run.
“It’s a very challenging defense, and it’s something that for sure is going to make us better in the long run as an offense, even though it’s going to look at times like it’s not very good,” Nagy said. “We’ve got to balance that and understand that’s okay, and that he’s going to give us some difficult looks, whether it’s protection, run game or coverage on the back end, disguising things.
“That’s the nature of the beast. We’ve got to stay patient, and our message with Jaxson right now is just to stay right here. Just stay even-keeled – never get too high, never get too low, and just be yourself.”
