The Sacramento Police Department will hold a sobriety checkpoint from 8 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location within city limits, the agency said in a news release.

“DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes,” the release said. “The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.”
Drivers charged with their first DUI could face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and have their licenses suspended, the release said.

A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, funded the checkpoint, authorities said.
California law requires drivers to stop and submit to a sobriety checkpoint when directed by law enforcement.
