That Type Ofa Deal raced at the back of the field in the Saturday’s $75,000 Minnesota Derby and only looked like a winner in the final sixteenth when he surged past pacesetter Navarre and rail-hugging Perfect Gamble to a one-length win at Canterbury Park.

Trainer Joel Berndt had hoped for a tracking trip in the race for 3-year-old Minnesota-breds and That Type Ofa Deal provided it.
“Let them go and then run on by,” Berndt said of the Runhappy gelding, who was guided by Canterbury leading rider Manuel Americano.
That Type Ofa Deal finished the one-mile 70-yard trip in 1:43.89 and returned $19.80 for the victory.
Perfect Gamble was second, Navarre was third, and 1-9 favorite How Bout That Curt was fourth.
That Type Ofa Deal campaigns as a homebred or Suzanne Stables, which bred him from the Tiznow mare Puffle Feathers.
“He’s a slow-developing horse,” Berndt said of That Type Ofa Deal, who earned his first stakes victory and second win overall from six career starts, “and every work, every race he got better, better, better and peaked today.”

Later on the card, betting favorite Summer Winner was victorious in the $75,000 Minnesota Oaks. The Promises Fulfilled filly is co-owned by Pete Mattson and trainer Tim Padilla. Finishing second was Nancy’s Shawl who also is trained by Padilla and owned by Mattson.
Later on the card, pacesetter and favorite Summer Winner lost her advantage near the quarter pole but battled back to capture the $75,000 Minnesota Oaks.
Ridden by Alonso Quinonez for trainer Tim Padilla, Summer Winner laid down the early tempo while 11-1 Nancy’s Shawl stalked fourth then third. Approaching the quarter pole, Nancy’s Shawl launched a bid on the outside of Summer Winner and gained a short lead by the eighth pole. Summer Winner would not be denied and gamely battled back to retake control at the sixteenth pole and went on to a half-length triumph.
“That was a great race. They both had an equal chance to win,” said Padilla, who also campaigns the filly as a homebred with Peter Mattson. “[Summer Winner] just outkicked [Nancy’s Shawl]. She’s just faster.”
Summer Winner’s dam is the Candy Ride (ARG) mare Summer Swing.
Summer Winner, who completed the one mile and 70 yards in 1:42.01, paid a win mutuel of $4.60.
Heavenly Captive was third in the field of seven Minnesota-bred fillies.
Americano enjoyed a banner day Saturday, capping four wins on the eight-race card when he rode Thunders Rocknroll to victory in the finale, which boosted the Minnesota-bred Mclean’s Music mare’s career earnings to $512,137. The rider also won the fourth race on Charlies Mint and the sixth race on Crew Dragon.

Handle for the Saturday card was $872,172.
