The trend of Power Four programs canceling previously scheduled games against Group of Six schools appears likely to impact San Diego State’s future football schedules.

Oklahoma announced changes last week to its 2027 nonconference schedule. The Sooners added a “Week 0” game against Utah State and changed the date of a game against SMU.
Then there was some confusion.
Though it was not mentioned in Oklahoma’s release, news outlets in the state and nationally reported that the Sooners still have one nonconference opening on the schedule. For the past four years, SDSU’s 2027 schedule has included a game against OU in Norman, Okla.
So the game against the Aztecs is now off? Not officially.
SDSU has not announced any changes, and a school official said Monday there is nothing definitive to report.
SDSU is scheduled to play Oklahoma three times in coming seasons, on the road in 2027 and 2031 and at home in 2029. Whether one or more of those games is in jeopardy is not yet known.
The contract includes a buyout clause, though the amount was not immediately available from SDSU officials.
Power Four programs continue to schedule home “buy” games against Group of Six schools, but the P4 schools have moved away from scheduling home-and-home series with Group of Six schools. The thinking is that playing such road games offers more risks than rewards for P4 programs trying to build playoff resumes.
Previously scheduled nonconference games also have been canceled to open a spot for conferences that have gone to nine-game conference schedules or the desire to schedule additional “power” nonconference games.
With this in mind, SDSU could see previously scheduled series with two other Power Four programs in jeopardy as well. The Aztecs are scheduled to play Missouri (home games in 2027 and 2033 and road games in 2028 and 2034) and Arizona State (home game in 2028 and road game in 2029). Buyouts also would be involved if those opponents back out.
SDSU’s 2026 schedule actually was helped by a Power Four cancellation. The Aztecs’ Week 3 home game against James Madison came about because Virginia Tech canceled a game against the Dukes.
Upon further review
SDSU coach Sean Lewis reviewed scrimmage film over the weekend and said after Monday’s practice that “we’ve got to get better. So many errors all over the place. To be expected.”

The words of the day at Monday morning’s practice: “Focus and finish.”
“We’re in Week 3 of camp and you kind of watch on either side of the ball as the scrimmage goes along,” Lewis said. “The offensive production goes up and the defensive strain, focus and finish went down. …
“Offensively, I thought we did a nice job of moving the ball, but then again as drives went along, we ended up stalling out in the red area and we didn’t get into the paint until the second half.”
Lewis said coaches this week will stress running as many plays in all three phases where all 11 players are in sync. He said there were too many plays during the scrimmage where one or two players were off script.
“We need all 11 out of 11,” Lewis said. “Otherwise, the football gods are going to find those one or two guys that are doing it the wrong way.
“We’re just dialing in the details, where how many reps can we stack where all 11 guys are doing their job to the best of their ability.”
Scrimmage shoutouts
Moments after the scrimmage, Lewis mentioned a handful of players who made an impression. After watching the film, he noted a few more.
“I thought (center) Isaac Lucas has done a really good job of anchoring the middle,” Lewis said. “(Edge) Brady Nassar did some really great things as well. (Safety) Jalen Thomeson did a nice job also.
“(Wide receiver) Daishaun Davis, I say with baited breath as a true freshman, is starting to do some good things. He’s starting to figure it out, and some of the things we saw on his high school tape are starting to flash.”
Injury updates
Lewis said the shoulder injury suffered by redshirt freshman offensive lineman Ashdon Wnetrzak involved the AC joint and was not determined to be serious. Left guard Kalan Ellis left the scrimmage briefly with a left ankle issue – a trainer applied more tape – but was a practice participant on Monday.
Wide receiver Justius Lowe, who missed the scrimmage and was wearing a left knee brace, was moving better while working out away from the other receivers. Running back Christian Washington was wearing a bucket hat rather than a helmet and did not practice. Wide receiver Jacob Bostick also continued to be held out.
