The San Francisco-based conglomerate announced the launch of ChatGPT For Teens, which it has designed as a homework tool to help users between 13 and 17 years of age with coursework and study questions. It allows them to ask the platform for help explaining a concept or how to do a problem set.

“For users under 18, ChatGPT for Teens applies age-appropriate safeguards designed to reduce exposure to content that may be harmful or developmentally inappropriate, while preserving the ability to learn, create and explore,” the company said in a news release.

Parents can monitor their kids’ activity by linking their accounts, and can set limitations on when teenagers can access ChatGPT for Teens, and can receive notifications to view what content their kids are seeing.

Several parents have sued OpenAI and other AI startups, claiming their chatbots’ internal controls were too lax and exacerbated their children’s mental illness, leading to suicide, or allowed them to view inappropriate content like how to starve themselves or engaging in sexually charged conversations.

After restructuring itself last year, the nonprofit overseeing OpenAI said it would invest billions in public health research and develop new guidelines for ChatGPT’s interactions with child users.

OpenAI said ChatGPT for Teens would have built-in guardrails to prevent teenage users from accessing anything related to eating disorders, sexuality, violence and other inappropriate content.

OpenAI, one of the wealthiest companies in the world, is expected to go public soon at a valuation of almost $1 trillion. Anxiety over AI has come to dominate elections as voters and policymakers have grown skeptical of AI’s demand on natural resources and its potential to automate entire job industries out of existence.
