Gabriel Rubio’s Preseason Buzz Could Force Steelers Into Tough Roster Calls

One of the more pleasant surprises in the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp has come from more than just the play of the young quarterbacks. A Day 3 pick has stood out after initially being viewed as a complete unknown. On draft night, not many people knew who Notre Dame prospect Gabriel Rubio was. Actually, let’s be honest, almost no one did. However, Rubio has gone from a practice-squad-at-best projection to a serious contender for the 53-man roster since training camp began. His rise has caught the attention of fans and analysts, including former Steelers player and Super Bowl champion Max Starks.

Starks has been especially impressed with Rubio. However, he believes this was a pick where a specific scout had an adamant belief in the young defensive lineman. The Steelers might be seeing that conviction pay off right before their eyes.

“Yeah, a sixth-round draft pick, that’s a passion pick from your scouts … He comes from a prestigious university, but no one really, I mean, he had a handful of games last year that he played in. There wasn’t really consistent tape. You’d have to go two years back to find that consistent tape.” Starks said.

Rubio has a lot to prove, everything to gain

As a sixth-round pick, Rubio still has plenty to prove before he can secure a spot on the Steelers’ opening-day roster. Strong practices can get a player noticed, but he must continue producing when the competition becomes more intense. That makes the remainder of the preseason especially important for Rubio. Every snap gives him another opportunity to show the coaching staff that his development deserves to continue in Pittsburgh.

The upside is significant. If Rubio continues to improve, he could eventually carve out a meaningful role in the Steelers’ defensive line rotation. For now, however, his focus should be on proving that his impressive training camp is not a fluke.

Rubio can change the narrative of his draft status

Rubio entered the NFL with very little hype. He was not considered one of the top defensive line prospects in the class. Some evaluators may have viewed his selection as a reach even in the sixth round. That lack of attention makes his early success even more intriguing.

The Steelers do not need Rubio to become a star immediately. They need him to continue developing and proving that the organization saw something others missed.

If he can turn his impressive camp into consistent preseason production, Rubio can completely change the narrative surrounding his draft status. What initially looked like an obscure sixth-round selection could eventually look like one of the better late-round picks the Steelers made.
