A wildfire burning Friday afternoon in Nevada County has charred about 8 acres and prompted evacuation orders and warnings about 5 miles south of Grass Valley, officials said.

The Clover Fire started just after 1 p.m. near Clover Valley and Fay roads, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit. Cal Fire crews estimated the blaze at about 8 acres shortly after 2 p.m. No containment was reported.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office issued mandatory evacuations at 1:45 p.m. for zone NCO-E048 as the fire ran to Clover Valley and Rainbow roads. Residents in the zone were told to evacuate immediately. The Sheriff’s Office later placed zone NCO-E050 under an evacuation warning.
Children evacuated from Alta Sierra Elementary School were being taken to Magnolia Intermediate School, where officials established a temporary evacuation point for residents at 22431 Kingston Lane in Grass Valley, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials also established a temporary evacuation shelter for animals at Nevada County Horsemen, 10600 Bubbling Wells Road in Grass Valley.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
