A 29-year-old armed man died and a McDonald’s employee was wounded Monday after gunfire erupted inside a Lodi restaurant and police opened fire, authorities said.

Lodi police identified the dead man as Jonhatan Anguiano. The employee, a woman whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition Monday night.
Police were called about 9:30 a.m. to a report of an armed person inside the McDonald’s in the 200 block of West Lodi Avenue, according to the Lodi Police Department.
An armed man was reportedly threatening employees and customers inside the restaurant before opening fire, police told the Lodi News-Sentinel. Officers heard gunfire from inside the restaurant when they arrived and found an employee who had been shot, police said.
The officers moved toward the gunfire and encountered Anguiano, who was armed, police said. At least one officer then opened fire. Emergency personnel were called to the restaurant, but Anguiano was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police did not say in their Monday night update who shot the employee or whether Anguiano died from police gunfire. The department also did not provide additional details about what led to the shooting.
Investigators recovered a firearm from the scene, according to police.
The shooting is being investigated under the San Joaquin County Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol. The investigation includes the Lodi Police Department, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and California Department of Justice.
