Adored Sacramento business, Freeport Bakery, has been sold to a new owner as its founders get ready for retirement.

Considered a Sacramento landmark, Freeport Bakery has spent 40 years at its Land Park location at 2966 Freeport Blvd.
The bakery will officially change ownership in September, according to a report from KVIE’s Abridged news site, which said the bakery will be run by Lisa Calk, the owner of Ettore’s Bakery & Cafe.
Ettore’s opened on Fair Oaks Boulevard in Arden Arcade in the 1980s, according to previous reporting from The Sacramento Bee.
Freeport Bakery owners, Walter and Marlene Goetzeler, opened Freeport Bakery in 1987, selling wedding cakes as well as an assortment of pastries, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, and fruit tarts.

The Goetzelers had relocated to Sacramento from San Diego where the couple met.
On their 30th anniversary in business the couple spoke with The Bee about their start in Sacramento and how Marlene Goetzeler would offer free samples to people waiting in their cars for the freight train to pass at the nearby crossing.
In their decades of operation, the bakery became famous not just for its baked goods, but also for a viral moment in 2016 over a cake featuring a Ken doll wearing a tiara and a pink dress.
The Geotzelers did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.
Freeport Bakery is open on Tuesdays to Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The bakery is closed on Mondays.
