As Mark Vientos nears his return to the New York Mets, he may not have a spot completely locked down on the roster.

Speaking with reporters before Wednesday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, interim manager Andy Green was asked about what role he sees Vientos having once he’s activated off the injured list.
“I don’t know. I was very forthright with him when he started the rehab assignment that a lot of that will be dictated by how others perform and also by how he performs,” Green said.
“I still think there’s a very bright future out there for him, if he wants to go grab a hold of it. That’s on him. When he gets back in the box, take advantage of the at-bats you do get and prove you deserve more at-bats.
He has all the talent that he possessed in ’24 when he was hitting close to 30 home runs and didn’t even start the season with the big-league club. It is all right there. It’s on him for that to come out.”

Vientos has been on the injured list since July 10 with a fractured right hand after getting hit by a pitch against the Kansas City Royals. The 26-year-old, however, has not produced this season when healthy.
Across 73 games this season, Vientos is slashing just .211/.256/.388 with 11 home runs, 35 RBI and a .644 OPS.
Since being placed on the IL, New York has relied heavily on Jared Young taking the bulk of reps at first base, filling in nicely both offensively and defensively.
The Mets have also utilized many options at the DH position, with Brett Baty, Francisco Álvarez, Luis Torrens, Eric Wagaman, and Christopher Morel all seeing time there. That could further hinder Vientos’ chances of any meaningful playing time once he returns.
It’s been a difficult last couple of seasons for Vientos after his breakout 2024 campaign, which Green alluded to. With these comments from the Mets’ interim skipper, it’s fair to say that Vientos’ time in New York could be running out.
