Westbound Highway 50 was shut down on the border of Gold River and Rancho Cordova early Tuesday after an officer-involved shooting on the freeway, authorities said.

The shooting occurred just after midnight after a man driving a Volvo SUV evaded the California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement officers during an attempted felony stop late Monday night.
CHP officers and Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies tried for several minutes to stop the driver on the freeway and Rancho Cordova-area surface streets before the pursuit ended on Highway 50 between the Hazel Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard exits.
Sgt. Ed Igoe, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed an officer-involved shooting occurred but said no other details were immediately available.

The man who was shot was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center. His condition was not immediately known.
Westbound Highway 50 was expected to remain closed for several hours while investigators processed the scene.
