All westbound lanes of Highway 50 reopened about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after a fatal shooting involving officers from three law enforcement agencies closed the freeway for hours near Hazel Avenue.

The freeway had been closed between Hazel Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard as investigators processed the shooting scene on the freeway dividing Rancho Cordova and Gold River.

The incident began about 11:20 p.m. when CHP officers attempted to stop the driver of a Volvo SUV for driving without headlights near Folsom and Sunrise boulevards. Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies and Citrus Heights police assisted as officers tried for more than a half-hour to stop the driver on the freeway and surface streets.
The Sheriff’s Office said CHP requested its assistance about 11:30 p.m. as the pursuit traveled east on Highway 50 near Hazel Avenue. Several east patrol deputies and a sheriff’s K-9 deputy responded, and deputies deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop the SUV, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Ed Igoe.
Dispatch audio reviewed by The Sacramento Bee indicated the driver rammed at least one patrol vehicle during the pursuit. In the minutes before the shooting, officers reported over the radio that the driver was pointing a laser from the SUV. Officers later reported that a green laser was attached to a BB gun but remained uncertain about the source of another laser.
The pursuit ended on Highway 50 just west of Hazel Avenue when the vehicle became disabled by spike strips. Moments later, officers reported shots fired and that the driver was down.

At least one CHP officer, sheriff’s deputy and Citrus Heights officer fired their weapons in the shooting, Brown and Igoe said. It was not known how many rounds were fired at the suspect.
Officers immediately provided emergency medical aid to the man before firefighters took him to Mercy San Juan Medical Center where he later died. He was expected to be identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office in the coming days.
No officers were injured, Brown and Igoe said.
The CHP is leading the investigation into the shooting. The Sheriff’s Office said its Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division would conduct a parallel investigation, and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office would independently review the shooting.
The sheriff’s deputy who fired a weapon will be placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The hourslong closure snarled the morning commute into Sacramento, shutting down westbound Highway 50 between Hazel Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard. Motorists from Folsom and El Dorado Hills were forced to detour onto Folsom Boulevard or take Greenback Lane or other streets through Fair Oaks, Orangevale and Citrus Heights until lanes reopened.
