The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the violence began with an argument at the nearby Sam’s Club at Power Inn and Calvine roads before the dispute continued onto the road.

A male driver in the suspect vehicle fired several rounds into a red Chevrolet HHR carrying two adults and two children, sheriff’s officials said. One bullet struck a car seat where a baby was sitting, missing the child by inches. The baby was unharmed.

The adult male in the HHR was struck by the gunfire. Deputies arrived and provided immediate medical care until medics took him to a hospital.

The wounded man was in critical but stable condition Wednesday night, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The other adult and two children in the vehicle were not injured.

Detectives were taking over the investigation after being briefed by patrol deputies who responded to the shooting. Investigators did not have any suspect information to release.
