An official cause of death has been released for Chicago Bears legend Matt Suhey.

Suhey, the lead fullback and best friend for Bears legend Walter Payton, was found dead at the age of 68 earlier this month. He was found last Sunday at his home in Deerfield, Illinois. A spokesperson for the Lake County Coroner’s Officer told The California Post that the initial police investigation “revealed that there were no suspicious circumstances” in his death.
The official cause of death for Suhey is listed as natural causes.
“Our preliminary investigation indicated that Mr. Suhey had a significant medical history and was being treated by a primary care physician (PCP),” Lake County Coroner’s Office chief deputy Steve Newton told the Post. “Therefore, our investigation was limited, and the PCP will be completing the death certificate for him, as it will be natural causes.”

Suhey was known for his ferocious blocking for Payton. He finished his NFL career with 2,946 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns and was named one of the 100 greatest Bears of all time.

“Matt Suhey passed away yesterday. He was my dad’s closest friend. After we lost my dad in 1999, Matt became the biggest father figure I had. When everything felt uncertain, he was there. My dad left him in charge and Matt never let that responsibility sit lightly. He protected our family. He looked after us. He made sure we were okay, year after year, without ever making it about himself. That is who he was. Their friendship showed me what real friendship looks like. Not the easy kind.
