Ryan Day keeps making the same mistake in big games at Ohio State.
The Ohio State Buckeyes were leading the Texas Longhorns by 20 points in the second half on Saturday evening. However, Ohio State blew the lead, allowing Texas to come from behind and secure a huge, upset victory.

Day doesn’t lose many games at Ohio State. However, when he does, it’s usually the same story. And he always has himself to blame.
The Ohio State Buckeyes national title-winning head coach continues to make the same kind of mistake.
Day’s strategy when leading in a big game appears to be to try and “sit” on the lead. The Buckeyes run the ball more and play conservatively. Day hopes that his defense and his clock management will allow Ohio State to pull out the victory.
When you’re the head coach at Ohio State, that is not the right kind of strategy.

Ohio State typically has more talent than the other team. The Buckeyes do not need or want to shorten the game. In fact, the more possessions, the better. Talent will shine through the more opportunities you give it.
But Day doesn’t seem to get that.
Ohio State will play aggressive for one half and then curl up into a ball and play conservatively to attempt to hold onto the lead.
Day has done it in the past in games against Georgia, Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame, etc. and he keeps doing it on the big stage. If Ohio State gets into a huge matchup again later this season, odds are, he’ll try it again.

But the Ohio State coach can’t afford to keep making the same mistake.
