The Los Angeles Rams keep getting dealt big blows following their embarrassing trip to Australia. Now, their prized acquisition of the summer faces a temporary setback that could alter the immediate future of the Rams’ 2026 season. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Myles Garrett has been placed on injured reserve following knee repair surgery that will keep him out for at least four weeks.

This is a devastating blow to a Rams defense that was banking on Garrett to solidify that side of the ball. His arrival even helped convince Aaron Donald to come out of retirement as Los Angeles emerged as one of the clear favorites to win it all in 2026. After getting smacked by the San Francisco 49ers and now losing Garrett, there will be plenty of questions about the Rams’ outlook if their defensive centerpiece cannot return quickly.
How much does this change Los Angeles’ outlook?
The severity of Garrett’s injury and his eventual effectiveness will determine just how damaging this setback becomes. If he returns after the minimum four-week absence and looks like the dominant pass rusher the Rams expected, Los Angeles could weather the storm. However, knee surgery creates legitimate concerns about whether Garrett will immediately return to form.
The Rams cannot afford to assume Garrett will simply pick up where he left off. They made a massive investment in his arrival because they believed he could transform their defense and give them an elite presence off the edge. Without him, opposing offenses could have more opportunities to attack a defense that already showed vulnerabilities against San Francisco.
If Garrett needs additional time or struggles to regain his explosiveness, the Rams could find themselves fighting uphill for the remainder of the season.

Can the Rams stay ahead of the division?
The NFC West already looked like one of the NFL’s toughest divisions, and Garrett’s injury only makes the race tighter. The Seattle Seahawks and 49ers now have an opportunity to put additional pressure on Los Angeles while its biggest defensive weapon sits on the sideline.
San Francisco already delivered a statement against the Rams, while Seattle has the roster capable of competing for the division crown. Every game becomes more important for Los Angeles, especially if Garrett misses more than the minimum four weeks.
The Rams remain a talented team, but their margin for error has suddenly become much smaller.
