One look at Karl Malone and you can see the guy takes things seriously. That’s how he approached things on the court and off it, too.
That’s why when the Mailman saw things he didn’t like from his teammates, he wasn’t just the type to shrug it off and move on. Malone expected a lot from himself, and he also expected the same level of commitment from everyone, down to the 12th guy. After one particularly ugly loss in 1990, Karl made that very clear.
Malone called out his teammates
At this point in his career, Malone had already established himself as a force to be reckoned with. He just came off his best statistical season, averaging career highs in points (31.0 PPG) and field goal shooting percentage (56.2 percent).
The problem was that the Jazz always fell short. Utah secured 55 wins and the West’s fourth seed in 1989-90, but still bowed out of the first round against a much deeper Phoenix Suns squad.
The Suns’ depth was on display the entire series. They had seven guys averaging at least 23 minutes per game. Two of them, Eddie Johnson and Dan Majerle, scored double digits off the bench. Johnson was the team’s third-leading scorer (19.2), and Majerle was its 5th (11.6), both as reserves.
Therefore, in the 1990-91 season, it was only natural for Malone to expect more out of Utah’s bench. He was pretty disappointed when the Jazz reserves again wilted like flowers in an early-season matchup with the Boston Celtics.
At that point, Utah was looking for answers after a three-game slide. They had already lost to Houston, Chicago, and Orlando in consecutive games. Facing a still-dangerous Celtics lineup, Malone was livid that the Jazz bench didn’t show up. They were outscored 29-23, and nobody stepped up in the playmaking department (the Boston bench had eight assists, while Utah had only one).
“You look down at (the Celtics’) bench, and you see players who are hungry. You look down at ours and see players who don’t belong in the league,” Malone said after the game.

As the Mailman noted, it wasn’t so much about talent as hunger and intensity. In the NBA, the bench wasn’t expected to carry the load for long stretches. However, they were expected to provide energy, especially when the starters were outmatched. The Jazz reserves offered nothing in that area.
According to Brad Rock of Deseret News, Malone heard from Jerry Sloan after his criticism. He never dissed his teammates again, but it’s also safe to say they got the message. After starting 2-5 in their first seven contests, the Jazz went 23-7 over the next 30. They finished with 54 wins, which was good for 5th in the West.

What type of leader is the most effective?
Malone’s leadership style came to the forefront after he publicly disparaged the Jazz bench. That message was anything but subtle. If anything, that comment would destroy a lesser person and probably strip certain guys of their confidence.
That’s why that leadership style won’t work for every team or player. Some leaders motivate through words of encouragement, while others go at the throat at the first chance they get. Malone clearly belonged to the latter group.
Still, there’s something to be said for a leader who isn’t afraid to call it as he saw it. The bigger question is whether the message gets through without tearing the team apart. If it does, it also proves Malone’s point. The NBA is a ruthless business, and not everyone who makes it to the league is cut out to stay there.
