The Detroit Lions won their regular season opener at Ford Field against the New Orleans Saints. After blowing a 21-point lead in the third quarter and allowing the Saints to tie the game, Detroit won it in overtime by a final score of 31-30.

The Lions offense was led by quarterback Jared Goff, who completed 26 of 39 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns.
Goff targeted his lead wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown 14 times, more than anyone else on the team. St. Brown hauled in 10 receptions for 67 yards and caught both of Goff’s touchdown passes.
During Detroit’s second drive in the fourth quarter, the Saints defense committed a pair of penalties that helped the Lions get into field goal range. First, a facemask penalty on the kickoff gave Detroit the ball at midfield.
A few plays later, Saints defender Quincy Riley committed a low block on St. Brown during a play. The referees threw the flag and the penalty awarded 15 additional yards.

However, that may not be the only punishment Riley receives. The NFL will review the play and determine whether he will also be fined for the infraction.
Under the NFL’s 2026 fines and appeals schedule, the penalty for a low block on a first offense is $12,537. The fine is designed to protect player safety, and fortunately the play did not result in an injury to St. Brown.
St. Brown and the Lions will head to Buffalo in Week 2 to take on Josh Allen and the Bills.
