A suspect died after allegedly setting fire to an RV and fleeing Elk Grove police who fired on him before he took his own life, according to authorities.

Officers responded to a report of arson at a home in the 8600 block of Bradshaw Road around 6 p.m. Saturday, the Elk Grove Police Department said in a news release.
At the scene, officers found an RV trailer on fire, which police said the suspect had set ablaze.
No one was inside the RV at the time of the fire, which was extinguished by the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department.
The owners of the RV knew the suspect, but the nature of the relationship remained unclear, police said.
The suspect fled the scene and ran through the semi-rural area, police said.
Officers searched for the suspect with the help of a police helicopter. When the suspect was located, he appeared to be holding a rifle, according to police.

The suspect pointed the weapon at the police helicopter, prompting an officer to fire at him, police said.
The suspect was not struck by the officer’s gunfire and was later found dead. Police said he died by suicide.
The weapon that police initially believed was a rifle was later identified as a pellet gun.
As detectives continued to investigate the case, the Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau was expected to conduct an independent review, as is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office was also expected to review the shooting under its use of force policy.
Under department policy, the officer involved in the shooting was placed administrative leave.
