Drivers can once again experience the entire Big Sur coast after Caltrans reopened scenic Highway 1 on Monday morning.

Through traffic on the road has been blocked by multiple closures for more than a month as crews battled two wildfires burning in the area.
As of 6 a.m. on Monday morning, Highway 1 had fully reopened, with drivers on Highway 1 able to travel directly between Cambria and Carmel, Caltrans announced in a news release.
At one point, the highway closure shut down 45 miles of Highway 1 when the Timber Fire grew into the Los Padres National Forest, and the Plaskett Fire ignited to the south near of Gorda.

Now, the Plaskett Fire is now 89% contained having burned 29,961 acres, while the Timber Fire is 39% contained and has burned 25,426 acres, according to Cal Fire.
Travelers are advised to be alert for emergency response vehicles and activities as crews continue with fire operations at both locations, the release said.
