As the Houston Astros look to maintain their slim one-game lead in the AL West, they may look to try an intriguing move involving Carlos Correa.

During an appearance on the Foul Territory podcast Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that Correa could play some second base if he makes it back for the rest of the regular season.
“Carlos Correa, they’re hoping comes back this week and if Correa comes back on certain days, if they can put [Yordan] Alvarez in the outfield, they’re going to play Correa, potentially at second base,” Rosenthal said.
“[Jose] Altuve, not a good defender at second this year; he’s been declining at that spot. Isaac Paredes, they don’t want to play him at second; it’s not his natural spot. So if you have a situation where Correa is healthy, where Alvarez can play the outfield…Correa would give them an emotional boost,” Rosenthal added.

Correa, who turns 32 on September 22, has been on the injured list since May 6 after undergoing surgery for a torn left ankle tendon. His season was expected to be over.

But after a remarkable rehab process and reportedly slated to go on a rehab assignment as early as next week for Triple-A Sugar Land, the 12-year veteran could now return to Houston’s lineup in the near future.
Correa has played in only 32 games this season for the Astros, slashing .279/.369/.418 with three home runs and 16 RBI, which came at shortstop and third base. He has not, however, played second base in his big-league career.
For much of this season, the Astros infield has consisted of Isaac Paredes at third base, Jeremy Peña at shortstop, Jose Altuve at second base and Christian Walker at first base.
This is not the first time the Astros have played someone out of position. Altuve became Houston’s starting left fielder last year but later moved back to his natural position at second base after struggling. But as Rosenthal noted, Altuve has not had a great season defensively, ranking last in all of baseball with -17 Defensive Runs Saved and -11 Outs Above Average, according to Advanced Metrics.
With Altuve struggling at second base and the Astros continuing to hold onto the AL West by a thread, perhaps a healthy Correa playing at a brand new position could pay dividends for Houston’s playoff hopes. The Astros begin play Monday as the only team in the AL West with a record of .500 at 75-75.
