The Cincinnati Bengals opened the 2026 season with a 33-27 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Joe Burrow was solid rather than spectacular, completing 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown. The true difference maker was Cincinnati’s defense, which forced three first-half fumbles returning one for a touchdown and setting up two more offensive scores.

The Houston Texans had the opposite start. They fell 36-31 to Buffalo despite taking a late 31-30 lead. Josh Allen finished with 334 passing yards and four total touchdowns, including the decisive 34-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer. Houston’s defense, which was expected to be one of the league’s best, surrendered 409 total yards.
That makes Week 2 a much bigger test for Houston, as the Bengals arrive with a dangerous offense and opportunistic defense.
The Texans Have Plenty to Answer Before Facing Cincinnati
While Houston entered the season viewing their defense as their greatest strength, the unit became the main concern after Week 1. The defense allowed far too many explosive plays against Buffalo. Dalton Kincaid had 130 receiving yards, DJ Moore added 100 yards and a touchdown, and Allen repeatedly found space when the Texans needed a stop.
Defensive end Will Anderson Jr. admitted the defense did not play to its standard, which mattered because Houston finished 2025 as the NFL’s top defensive unit. One bad afternoon does not erase that identity, but Week 2 gives the defense an immediate chance to rebound.

C.J. Stroud showed enough to give Houston confidence. His production of 274 yards and two touchdowns was more than Burrow’s. Stroud also connected with Nico Collins seven times for 75 yards, including a touchdown. The offense moved the ball well enough to score 31 points, but the two fumbles kept the quarterback from having a clean opening day.
On the other side, Cincinnati spread the ball around despite Ja’Marr Chase being held to two catches for 12 yards, relying on its defense to create short fields. The Bengals next to visit Reliant Stadium on September 20 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The Texans need their defensive front to pressure Burrow, while the offense must build on David Montgomery’s strong debut and protect Stroud in key situations. If Houston cleans up the explosive plays and turnovers, Week 1 can quickly become a warning rather than a trend.
