Rey Mysterio has held onto an unusual reminder of his rivalry with CM Punk for more than 16 years. The WWE Hall of Famer revealed that some of Punk’s hair from their infamous 2010 match is still preserved in a Ziploc bag as part of his collection.

“It was very fun being able to shave his hair. I actually still have part of his hair and a little Ziploc bag with the date on it, which is what we would do back in Mexico if you won a mask or you won a hair versus another opponent, you would save at least… I learned this from my uncle. I would put the hair in a little Ziploc bag, put a tape over it. Then I would put the date of the match who I wrestled and it’s there. I have a photo album and everything’s there.”
Mysterio confirmed that the unusual keepsake remains with him to this day. More than a decade after Punk’s head was shaved in the middle of a WWE ring, the former champion still has a physical reminder of the night tucked away among his career memorabilia.
Rey Mysterio and CM Punk’s 2010 Rivalry
Mysterio defeated “The Best in the World” at Over the Limit on May 23, 2010, in a Straight Edge Society Pledge vs. Hair Match. The stipulation meant Mysterio would have to join Punk’s Straight Edge Society if he lost, while Punk would have his head shaved if Mysterio won. The Hall of Famer won the match and then shaved Punk’s head in the middle of the ring.
The rivalry had become increasingly personal in the weeks leading up to the match, with Punk and the Straight Edge Society repeatedly targeting Mysterio. Their program eventually produced one of the more memorable images from Punk’s early WWE run: Mysterio cutting off his rival’s hair after winning their high-stakes encounter.
The two wrestlers actually had history before their WWE feud. Rey Mysterio recalled working with Punk and Eddie Guerrero in a three-way match on the independent scene before Mysterio returned to WWE in 2002.

Looking back at Punk’s development, Mysterio praised how much his former opponent had grown by the time they became WWE rivals.
“So to see that match and then forward, I don’t know, eight, nine years, 10 years, and to have a singles match with Punk and to see his growth and how he had his particular fan base that supported him was a really fun moment.”
Mysterio also described working with Punk as a valuable experience.
“It was a really good learning moment for me because look where he’s at now. He’s so damn good, man. And I enjoy stepping in the ring with him every time.”
For Mysterio, keeping Punk’s hair connects that memorable WWE victory to a tradition that has followed him throughout his wrestling career. The Ziploc bag may be an unusual keepsake, but it carries a personal meaning that goes well beyond the rivalry itself.
