The Chicago Cubs have ended Shelby Miller’s comeback attempt, meaning the veteran reliever will not pitch for the team during the 2026 postseason.

Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reported the decision on X ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. Miller and the Cubs mutually agreed to end his comeback and give him the remainder of the season to continue his recovery.
The 35-year-old right-hander has spent the entire season on the 60-day injured list while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. Miller signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract with Chicago before spring training with the hope of eventually contributing to the bullpen.
Shelby Miller will not factor into the Cubs’ bullpen plans this year. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said the club is shutting down Miller, who was attempting to come back to the majors one year after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery.

Miller began working toward that goal through a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa. He had been throwing regularly and making progress, creating a possibility that the Cubs could add him to their bullpen mix for October.
That opportunity is now off the table. Instead of rushing Miller into a postseason role, Chicago will allow him to continue his recovery and prepare for the 2027 season.

The Cubs still have reinforcements working their way back as they prepare for the postseason. Shortstop Dansby Swanson began a rehab assignment with Iowa on Tuesday and could return to Chicago as soon as this weekend.
Justin Steele is also continuing his throwing progression after missing most of the season. His return could give the Cubs another important option as they build their pitching staff for October.
Miller’s absence leaves Chicago without a former All-Star who was hoping to make his way back to the majors after a lengthy recovery. The decision also gives the Cubs more clarity as they finalize their postseason roster.
Chicago entered Tuesday with an 84-68 record and in second place in the NL Central. The Cubs remain in position for a National League Wild Card spot with the regular season nearing its conclusion.
For Miller, the focus now shifts to completing his recovery. After spending 2026 rehabbing from his second Tommy John procedure, he will have the offseason to prepare for a potential return in 2027.
