Davis Police Chief Todd Henry is leaving his post later this month to take a new job with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, according to Davis city officials.

Davis City Manager Daryel Dunston announced that Henry’s last day with the city will be Sept. 25. Henry will become an assistant sheriff in Placer County.
Henry joined the Davis Police Department’s command staff as deputy police chief in May 2023 and took over as police chief in October 2024.
During his time leading the department, city officials said Henry focused on filling staffing vacancies, supporting employee wellness programs, updating department operations and strengthening ties with the community.
Henry said it has been an honor to serve the Davis community.
“I’m grateful for the relationships we’ve built and proud of what we have accomplished as a community,” he said.

Dunston credited Henry with work on recruiting and retaining employees, building relationships in the community and developing partnerships with other agencies in the region.

With Henry’s departure coming up, Deputy Police Chief Matt Petersen will step in as interim chief.
Dunston said Petersen has 30 years of public safety experience and brings institutional knowledge to the job.
“I am confident in his ability to provide steady leadership and ensure the department continues to deliver the level of public safety services our community expects during this transition,” he said.
Petersen will oversee the department while the city determines its next steps for selecting a permanent police chief.
